Department history ...

Beginning of formation the Department of Animal Husbandry is at the University of Agricultural and woodcraft engineering in Košice, which was opened in 1946. Institute of the Animal Husbandry was established at the Department of Agricultural engineering in 1946.

From institutes were created some departments in 1950. The Department of Animal Husbandry was established from 3 former institutes - 1. Institute of General Animal Husbandry and Biotechnology, 2. Institute of Special Animal Husbandry, 3. Institute of dairy and cheese production.

The Slovak University of Agricultural in Nitra was established in 1952/1953 with two faculties: the Agronomic Faculty and the Animal Husbandry Faculty.

The Department of Animal Production was created at the Faculty of Animal Husbandry in 1952/53. The Department of Special Animal Husbandry was created from Department of Animal Production in 1953.

From the Department of Animal Husbandry were created two independent departments: the Department of cattle and horses breeding and the Department of pigs and sheep breeding in 1964/65.

Modern history of the Department of Animal Husbandry is data back to the year 1972, when the Department of cattle and horse breeding and the Department of pigs and sheep breeding were joined. And it exists in similar structure up to now.

Pedagogical activities ...

This department belongs to the group which is considered as "production departments". This department share on forming special profile of graduates study branches: the Management of Animal Production and the General Agricultural. The Department of Animal Husbandry share to profile of students all study branches and faculties SUA in the following levels of degree programs: Bachelor's (Bc.), Engineer's (Ing.) and Doctoral (PhD.).

Scientific and research activities ...

Scientific and research activity of department is oriented to development and knowledge application and results of biology sciences as well as technological advances in rationalization of breeding in European Union and permanent agricultural conditions.

There are various scientific and research programs solved at Department, in cooperation with foreign and home scientific groups, e. g. valuation of functional traits and utilization these traits in selection index in modern breeding programs, application of ethological principles and welfare in breeding, study technological and breeding systems of intensive and alternative animal production. The Department was dealing with breeding and exploitation of Slovak Sport pony and research objective test methods and processes valuation of utility traits and quality of production various utility and productive types of animals.

Cooperation in research activities with national and foreign institutions ...

The Department of Animal Husbandry cooperates with all important breeding organizations and enterprises in Slovakia (Breeders associations, State breeding institute e. g.). The meaningful cooperations at research programs were executed with several research institutes and universities in Slovakia and in Poland, Hungary and Czech Republic too. There were the Agreements on cooperation negotiated in 2005 with University of Technology and Agriculture, Bydgoszcz, Poland and South Bohemy University Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic. The genetic evaluation of body conformation traits is realized with cooperation with Bayerische Landesanstalt für Landwirtschaft in Grub, Deutschland and with Universität für Bodenkultur Wien, Austria is performed research at genetic evaluation of functional traits in cattle.
